Many people will be familar with Google's Adwords Editor / Keyword Tool. It is an invaluable resource for discovering keywords that are popular with Google search engine users. It allows a developer to enhance the effectiveness of their SEO efforts in order to direct users to their websites by using the most appropriate "synonym".  Eg A company that provides computer technical services may discover the keywords "geeks for hire" are 150 times more commonly used by users than "system administrators for hire". That said, Google will soon be discontinuing this tool in favor of their Keyword Planner Tool.

I've recently come to understand that many people are completely unaware of the power they command as an online citizen. That the choice of what to click on (or what you like/g+/share/etc...)  now has more significance than ever before ! I'm not saying that one person clicking on one link is going to change the world.   However 100 or 1000 clicks put together can have an enormous impact ! And a single person endorsing a thousand products/causes/services in a lifetime is a legacy, though if you look back on your time-line is it a legacy you are proud of ?.

I've talked about Backlinks in several of my posts so far.   But I haven't really gone into any detail about them.   They are certainly one component that you have "some control over" and contributes significantly (maybe even up to 30%) towards your pagerank.   This feeling of control seems to drive people to focus on collecting Backlinks and that may ultimately end up a complete waste of time.  It may also lead you to consider paying someone to "collect links" for you.   This is a bad idea...  You can't control what these people do.  If they list your website or generate backlinks using "cheats" or "trickery" or simply harvest backlinks from dubious sources they are ensuring that any short term benefits you receive could cost you your company's long term reputation and ranking.

This question may not be relevant to all industry types...  However these days it's almost impossible to have a business that exists online or not, without a homepage to provide some basic information to the world.   My question to you is "Do your customers link to you?"  Have you looked ?  Go do that now and then come back and read the rest of this blog entry.   Chances are that some or all of your clients are not linking to you, and chances are you can benefit greatly from them doing so !

Increasing the amount of backlinks that you have for your website is one of the many ways to improve your pagerank.   I'm of the opinion that the best way to generate them is developing a professional relationship with  "relevant" people to your industry.   However you achieve your connection with your professional partner/s, once you are in a position to blog/link/share their content with their knowledge you are able to develop your professional relationship over time.

Start your own professional network to gain knowledge and share experience ! For anyone starting up a small business venture you can easily feel like you are isolated without an avenue for professional support.  Social networks can provide instant but often superficial feedback to your efforts and the daily grind can leave you lacking inspiration to keep pushing forward.

One of my website clients recently mentioned to me that she hasn't spent much time marketing her products on facebook or twitter because she didn't want to spam her friends.   I thought to myself "that must be an extremely common problem", so I've come up with some ideas on how to avoid friend spamming.

I recently attended an SEO talk by Chris Schwarz of DBG Technologies who introduced me to the concept of "Signals".  Signals are very simply sections of any web page that indicate to Google that you mean business.  Certain types of functionality within a page can be detected and are considered by Google in it's evaluation of you.

I'm including page speed in the category of "content enrichment"...  I think it is almost as important as the content itself.  Having amazing images and rich content is one thing but if the user experience is sluggish you may find your visitors switching off (closing the site) before the page loads.    And I'm the first to admit that my attention span is as short as a well formed simile !

For any industry there are peers, these are the people/organizations that are highly regarded as an authority or expert in your domain.  How you find your peers depends on your understanding of your own industry but it is certainly an important thing to know.  If you are able to associate yourself with your Page Rank Peers you will be more likely to succeed in your online marketing efforts, especially if those peers are able and willing to link to you as an industry associate, post a media release for you or write an article to promote you.
